Why the elephant and the tortoise?
According to Indian cosmology, an elephant standing on a tortoise is a symbol of the stability of the world.
They are a visual reminder to maintain stability in a changing world.
The tortoise is associated with creation, fertility and long life.
Its slowness is seen as a sign of “festina lente”, which means “hurry slowly”.
It is also given a cosmological function in the form of being a being on whose back the Earth rests.
That is why it is designed with the round ball/earth on its back.
As you move the figure forward, it spins the ground slowly, giving you an extra reminder to slow down.
